Writer-director Richard Linklater, co-writer and Texas Monthly reporter Skip Hollinsworth, prosecutor Danny Buck Davidson, and defense attorney Scrappy Holmes will attend the East Texas premiere of the true-crime comedy Bernie at 6pm, May 31, at the 4 Star Cinema (1607 U.S. Highway 259 North, Kilgore, TX). Tickets are $150 each; all proceeds from the premiere will benefit Longview Ballet Theatre.
The movie is based on Hollinsworth’s 1998 article on the case of Bernie Tiede (played in the film by Jack Black), a funeral director and beloved town resident in rural Carthage, Texas, who befriended and later murdered local widow Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine). SurprisingMatthew McConaughey co-stars as Davidson, the man who brought Tiede to justice.
Many residents rallied to defend Tiede, even after he confessed to killing the unpopular woman; since its Fall 2011 release the film has generated controversy in Carthage for alleged inaccuracy and for presenting the incident as a dark comedy.
