Welcome to Movie Ink. The site was created February 2012 by Dallas-based arts & entertainment journalist Gary Dowell, with the intention of providing movie reviews and related features, as well as coverage of film festivals, productions, screenings, and special events in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and occasionally beyond.
Gary Dowell graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Texas at Arlington’s School of Communications in 1998. He worked as a film critic and section editor at The Met and the Dallas Morning News until the print industry’s umpteenth round of layoffs sent him in a different direction in 2004. Since then he has worked full-time as a catalog copywriter and consignment director in the Music & Entertainment Memorabilia, Movie Posters, Comic Books, Vintage Guitars, and Rare Book departments of Heritage Auctions. He has freelanced for the Dallas Morning News, Lakewood Advocate, Lit Monthly, Dark Horizons, Pop Citizen, and Theater Jones, and has worked as a travel coordinator, copy writer, submissions screener, and general volunteer for the USA Film Festival, Oak Cliff Film Festival, Dallas Video Festival, and Dallas International Film Festival. He is currently a member of the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association and editor of the audio fiction podcast Far Fetched Fables.
