The Dallas International Film Festival has announced that this year’s Dallas Star Award would be presented to noted costume designer Bernie Pollack (Ordinary People, Rain Man), and that it will honor Academy Award nominee Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) with the Dallas Shining Star Award. Both Pollack and Sidibe will receive their awards at DIFF’s annual awards dinner on Friday, April 20, 2012.
Pollack’s career as a costume designer spans more 40 years of film and television, including some of the greatest big-screen comedies and dramas of the 1980s and ’90s, creating wardrobes for Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie, Robert Redford in The Natural, and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, among others.
Sidibe was working on a degree in psychology when she was cast in the lead role of Claireece in Lee Daniels’ Precious (2009). The breakout performance earned critical acclaim and led to roles in the Showtime comedy series The Big C, Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist, and Victoria Mahoney’s indie drama Yelling to the Sky.
Conversations with Gabourey Sidibe and Bernie Pollack will be open to pass and ticket holders on April 21, 2012. A special screening of Precious will take place before the conversation with Sidibe.
